I apologise for the extreme lack of posts over the last month or so. I’m afraid this won’t get any better until the new year because I won’t have a computer until then. You probably think that I’m just being lazy about this, which I am, slightly but it is also the fact that I don’t want a new computer with a German keyboard, plug, garantee and everything when as of Jan I can buy one in the UK. Yes, big news. January I start my new job in London. I will be working at the same company, but in a different country. So the last 2 or 3 months has seen me working that all out and now Christmas is coming. i have a crazy Christmas and New Year season which starts today with my first guest of the holiday season. Tomorrow night we’re having a big flat party to kick off advent with a bang. November I spent quite a lot of time in Munich but went to Vienna for the weekend and spent Halloween in Prague. October I went on a hiking weekend in the snowy alps and gave myself a bad cold by jumping in a 7 degree lake. Not big or clever but very pretty pictures. Oh, and before that was the Oktoberfest. I needed a couple of weeks after that just to recover. So business as usual here. I wish you a very good advent and stress-free Christmas shopping!
My video of the day. Brilliant.
Here is another little movie review from me of a film I enjoyed much more than I anticipated. It was another choice by Alex and he evenually persuaded me to spend another Sunday in a darkened cinema hall. District 9 had been described to me variously as “The best sci-fi film since the Matrix”, “really good but made my girlfriend hide” and “abgefahren” . I think I agree most with the last one. For an alien film it was surprisingly…realistic. In fact, you could have replaced the aliens with just about any huge group of refugees and the film wouldn’t have been much different. Well, there wouldn’t have been all that cool alien gadgetry but the human story would have been the same.
The film is extremely cynical about human natures, and as I’m becoming increasingly cynical in my old age, I couldn’t really find any fault with its reasoning. Something like what happens in the film probably WOULD happen in real life. There will be no spoilers in this post and all I can say is that if you want a thought-provoking alien film, go see this. It is REALLY gory in parts though, so that should keep the boys happy as alien guts fly everywhere.
Croquet was once an olympic sport:
Croquet
There was only ever one croquet competition in Olympic Games history, held in 1900 in Paris. France won all events, which is not surprising as only French competitors took part. In this event, the first women to take part in the Olympic Games occurred on June 28, 1900. It was also not a success with the spectators. Only one fan watched the events – an Englishman who had travelled from Nice especially for the occasion. No wonder we have not seen this event at the Olympics again.
A shame it was taken out of the schedule. The world is also the poorer for not having these sports in the olympic games.
Look at my Lederhosen, ursprünglich hochgeladen von georgina_miller
Instead of replying to all the emails I have piling up in my inbox and instead of writing my blog, I have been playing with photos on Flickr. So to make up for it here is a photo to show how amazing Alex and I looked in our Dirndl (mine) and Lederhosen (his). I will write an entry soon…
It just occured to me that it might be of interest to someone living in Munich where all this came from. I bought mine frim Wies’n Tracht & Mehr. I apologise for the horrendously kitschy advertising on the site but the shop isn’t half bad.

UP
I went to see UP at the weekend. We went to the cinema in the Nymphenburger Strasse because not only was it in English, but it was also in 3D. I’ve become purist and resent seeing films in anything other than the original, especially when the original is my language. I’m blogging about it because I thought it was brilliant.
Warning to complete sops like me, the beginning will make you cry. For the first 15 mins or so of the film there is hardly any talking but the story is shown in such a realistic and touching way that it will make you want to cry. The first section of the film is definitely aimed at adults, as the pasthos will probably fly straight over most children’s heads. I bill this as another film from Pixar that both kids and their parents, and 20 something couples
will love.
Once our grumpy hero flies off in his house, things start to get a bit more fantastic but the relationship between Russell and Mr Fredricksen is realistic and endearing. Russell is great, and very likeable, and not at all cutesy and irritating like the majority of kids in
You can see the trailer on YouTube but unfortunately I wasn’t allowed to embed it here.
Next Sunday we’re going to see District 9. I’ll keep you posted.
This week has been pretty heftig, and stressful. But tonight is going to be a good night (to misquote the legendary Black Eyed Peas who I heard in the shower this morning).
Lack of a computer has meant that in my rare free time I have been able to catch up a bit on correspondance. I am WAY overdue in replying to letters. To my shame it has taken my almost 2 months to reply to a good friend of mine. No idea where the time flies.
Yesterday Philippe arrived from Paris. He was meant to arrive on Tuesday but because of a job interview delayed his arrival a day. He got the job so he’s now in proper celebrating mood. It’s lovely to see him. I made a massive stir fry last night, 1kg of rice for 6 people (gonna be having rice for lunch and supper today…)
AND he gave me a box of Ladurée macaroons, apparently the last word in macaroons. They were delicious. He certainly knows the way to a girl’s heart.
All my student friends had their last exam today so tonight we’re going to go to the Oktoberfest to celebrate. This will be the first proper outing of my Dirndl.
This song stuck in my head as soon as I saw Inglorious Basterds and I just HAD to hear the full version. Enjoy Bowie in all his glory.
STILL haven’t had time to properly sit down and blog. And have a totally kaputt computer so can’t blog anyway even if I had time. A is still in full exam season so in my role as best girlfriend of all time I have been feeding him. Making sure he gets his vegetables and whatnot. His computer has also recently died, but not due to an evil virus like mine, but because of some essential hardware problem.
This song isn’t actually in the Watchmen soundtrack, only in one of the trailer versions. When I watched the trailer, AFTER watching the film I just thought that the music fit the mood of the film so perfectly. To listen to if you having dark thoughts about the world
